Walking the South Downs Way - Winchester to Amberley

Summary

The western half of the South Downs Way forms half of one of England's finest long-distance trails. Beginning in the historic cathedral city of Winchester, this walking holiday follows the broad chalk ridge of the South Downs eastwards through rolling downland, wooded escarpments and picturesque river valleys, ending in the beautiful village of Amberley in the Arun Valley.

Based throughout in Winchester, we use daily transfers to access the trail, allowing us to enjoy the full walking experience whilst carrying only a daypack and returning each evening to comfortable accommodation. Accompanied throughout by an expert Naturetrek leader, we explore some of the most celebrated landscapes in the South Downs National Park, combining walking with a rich blend of natural history, archaeology and heritage.

Among the highlights is Old Winchester Hill National Nature Reserve, where sweeping views, species-rich chalk grassland and a well-preserved Iron Age hillfort combine to create one of the most memorable locations on the trail. We continue across the open downs to Butser Hill, the highest point in the National Park, whose summit offers far-reaching panoramas across southern England. Further east, the dramatic scenery of Harting Down provides magnificent views across the Weald and towards the English Channel, whilst ancient trackways and earthworks reveal thousands of years of human activity within this remarkable landscape.

The South Downs are renowned for their chalk grasslands, one of the most important wildlife habitats in Britain. During the warmer months these flower-rich slopes support a wealth of butterflies, wildflowers and birdlife, whilst the broad ridges and open skies host raptors, ravens and larks.

Our journey concludes with a glorious walk to Amberley, one of Sussex's most attractive villages. Set beside the River Arun and overlooked by the downs, it provides a fitting finale to a walk through some of the finest countryside in England.
