The overall exposure to Japanese 'ways' - including the food, was really informative and fun. I enjoyed the mix of venues, hotels, food and nature. The huge fish owl I hoped for was amazing to see. The Stella Eagles were expected and great but the huge number of the Eagles was incredible. There were other great bird firsts - probably too many to mention. The accommodation was really excellent - especially the more traditional ones on the North Island (I will always remember the natural hot spring baths and looking at a snowy woodland whilst having a soak!) Duncan certainly knows his birds, was very amiable and friendly during the trip which certainly helped produce a friendly and supportive group. A highlight was the group itself - a very varied and friendly lot! The drivers and other staff we met were excellent - and indeed all the Japanese people we spoke with were really helpful and friendly. The extension to the South Island was definitely worth doing just for the cranes flying over us in the early morning. The additional few days in Tokyo and Kyoto gave a great balance to Japan and I would recommend to others.

Grading
Grade A. Slow paced walks but caution recommended due to very cold conditions.
In a world where western culture is increasingly becoming the norm, Japan remains ever so politely defiant, reluctant to loosen its grip on traditions that have held the nation together for centuries. Steeped in history, with an ancient refined culture and an extraordinary blend of Shintoism and Buddhism, travelling through Japan will always be a uniquely cultural experience whether one visits for that purpose or for its incredible wildlife.
Travelling in the depths of the Japanese winter, this exciting tour aims to showcase Japan’s most incredible wildlife spectacles, from winter gatherings of Steller’s Sea Eagles, to elegant Japanese Cranes dancing in the snow and Japanese Macaques bathing in hot water springs. Although not a dedicated photographic holiday, we will endeavour to see these key species at close quarters, affording some fantastic photo opportunities accentuated by the crisp winter light and beautiful snowy landscapes.
It is impossible to visit Japan without immersing oneself in its unique culture and traditions, and throughout our time here we will have the opportunity to experience many of these first hand, staying in traditional Japanese-style inns (ryokans), bathing in natural hot water springs (onsens) and sampling the country’s distinctive cuisine.
Arriving in Tokyo, we transfer quickly by rail to a comfortable city hotel offering fabulous views of this bustling capital city. The following morning we fly a short distance north, to Japan’s wildest and most northerly island, Hokkaido. Here, amongst the snow-covered fields and icy rivers, we will spend five days searching for some of Japan’s most iconic wildlife.
Standing nearly 1.5 metres tall and with a wingspan approaching 2.5 metres, the Japanese, or Red-crowned, Crane is a stunningly majestic bird, so much so that in the early 20th century it was almost hunted to extinction. Today, thanks to concerted conversation efforts, there are over 1,000 and in the winter months the cranes gather at several feeding and roosting sites across Hokkaido. The most famous of these is Otowa Bridge, where the birds can often be found at first light, shrouded in the early morning mist. If blessed with a clear and frosty morning, the scene is truly magical! Later in the day, the cranes will often move on to nearby fields to feed and, on a canvas of snow, it is possible to observe them performing their extravagant courtship dances, piercing the frozen air with their haunting calls.
Drawing ourselves away from the cranes, we will slowly make our way along the rocky headlands to the east, stopping frequently to scan the unfrozen bays and harbours for flocks of seabirds that may include Spectacled Guillemot, Ancient Murrelet, Least Auklet, Pelagic Cormorant, Harlequin Duck, Long-tailed Duck and Glaucous-winged Gull. Our destination is the fishing port of Rausu on the edge of Shiretoko National Park, home to the highest concentration of Steller’s Sea Eagles in the world. Drawn by the rich waters of the Okhotsk Sea, the mighty Steller’s Sea Eagles, one of the world’s largest eagle species, gather here in impressive numbers in the winter, providing a wonderful natural spectacle. The woodlands of this frozen landscape also harbour interesting wildlife, and in the evening we will wrap up warmly and head out in search of another avian heavyweight, the magnificent Blakiston’s Fish Owl, a specialist hunter of aquatic habitats and one of the world’s largest and rarest owl species.
Returning to Tokyo, we next travel by bullet train to Nagano Prefecture, where we have the opportunity to visit Hell Valley and observe Japanese Macaques, or ‘Snow Monkeys’, bathing in their favourite hot springs. Only a short walk from our hotel in Nagano, we will also visit the magnificent Zenkoji Temple, one of Japan’s largest and most important Buddhist temples and home to the first Buddhist statue ever to be brought into Japan, back in the 6th century.
We return to Tokyo for a final night in the capital before flying to London the following morning. With our minds filled with memories of dancing cranes, bathing macaques, delicious food and hospitable inhabitants, the ‘land of the rising sun’ is sure to have left its mark!
For those wishing to extend their time in Japan, we recommend flying south to the island of Kyushu. Attracted by the mild climate, more than 10,000 Hooded Cranes winter here and are joined by White-naped Cranes as well as Common and Sandhill Cranes, while the island’s coastal wetlands and forests attract Black-faced Spoonbill, Saunders’ Gull, Red-flanked Bluetail and Chestnut-eared Bunting.

Blakiston's Fish owl an excellent reward for sitting in a cold hide! The boat trips to the Stellar Sea Eagles was great to see and we got really good sightings of Red Crowned Cranes at the feeding stations. The ramen in the cafe at the monkey park was possibly my favourite meal of the trip - delicious! I also really enjoyed staying in the traditional Japanese guesthouses, and experiencing the onsen. It was a nice large and comfortable bus, allowing us room to spread out as we each had quite a lot of clothing and equipment due to the conditions. Barrie was very knowledgeable about the wildlife and made efforts to ensure that all clients had seen each bird or animal. He took time to seek out species - such as Japanese Serow, that we wouldn't have spotted without him. He was engaging and good company to be around.

Very enjoyable trip to Hokkaido, Japan. Fantastic Wildlife in the form of Eagles and Owls. Excellent traditional food and accommodation throughout the stay. The holiday provided an excellent balance between photography and sight seeing. The group size was fine and not too large. Great experience using the local trains including the Bullet Train. Some early mornings but not many. A good flavour of Japanese life. The trip was well organised and everyone knew where they were supposed to be and at what time. Flight tickets were issued in advance as was advice regarding filling in the right forms online for Japanese entry requirements. Check in at hotels was quick and rooms were usually excellent. One hotel was traditional Japanese (i.e. bed and furniture low to the floor) I enjoyed this but anyone with some mobility problems would have struggled.

It was just wonderful. Naturetrek are experienced showing birdwatchers the stunning birds and the culture of Japan. The holiday was fantastic. Excellent leaders who knew their birds, wonderful birds, amazing culture and hotels. Just terrific! [Naturetrek are] Excellent, friendly, efficient, try to make the holiday enjoyable and creating lots of memories of wonderful birds.

We really enjoyed this trip. The number of target species found worked well and I really enjoyed the Hokkaido leg of the trip, the cranes, Eagles and Fish owl were amazing. The Japanese people are so helpful and polite it was a pleasure to visit their country.
C.B. Norfolk, Feb 20 -
Very pleased with the arrangements made for us after the main tour finished which meant we had a lovely end to our stay in Japan. The last onsen on Hokkaido was lovely -a longer stay there would have been great. It was great to have local Guides who were all excellent to get more insight into Japanese culture, and to have helpful local drivers and to have a small group.
R.H. Essex, Feb 20 -
Excellent, the trip leader Barrie went out of his way to make sure everyone had a good time, he was always enthusiastic, knowledgeable and fantastic at being able to spot and identify birds. Barrie engaged with all members of the group, a good sense of humour and always good company. Barrie made the trip in many ways, one of the best tour leaders I have come across.
P.L. Cleveland, Feb 20 -
The sightings of the Red-crowned Cranes, Stellar Fish Eagles, Ural Owl and Blakiston Fish Owl were all excellent. Duncan was a very good leader and your local guide Sonoko was also first class.

I take so many things away from this wonderful trip. Beautiful memories of elegant cranes in their snowy world, close encounters with magnificent stellars sea eagles, wonder at the size of the fish owl and a greater appreciation of a different country and culture. Both of the local guides and the hotel staff were very helpful and the Naturetrek guide Duncan searched constantly for different species of birds and to provide us with good views through the telescope. As a novice birder I have been awestruck many a time by the beauty of the close up views the scope provides. Really appreciated the cultural experiences of traditional Onsen inns and Japanese food. Overall a fantastic trip.
J.W. Nottinghamshire, Jan 20 -
Greatly exceeded my expectations - I saw everything I wanted to (cranes, sea eagles, Blakiston’s and Ural owls, macaques) and so much more. I’m not a birder… but learned a lot and Duncan was very informative.
S.T. Bristol, Feb 19 -
[Duncan] uses language very expressively and informatively - his use of language would not be out of place in a Thomas Hardy novel. Cannot speak too highly of him as a tour leader.
G.S. Leicestershire, Feb 19 -
Duncan made the bird watching on the trip a joy… He took us to the right places at the right times, was brilliant at spotting and identifying species for us and was so efficient with the 'scope that he gave us close up views of many birds we would never have achieved for ourselves.
G.S. Leicestershire, Feb 19 -
I hugely enjoyed the Steller's eagles, and seeing the sky filled with so many (including the White Tailed) was remarkable. I took hundreds of photos as they wheeled around and dived down - exhausting but exhilarating!
P.D. Hertfordshire, Feb 19 -
Pretty much exactly what I had been hoping for… I was particularly keen to see the Red Crowned Cranes and Steller's eagles, but there was considerably more bird life to see, helped by a tour leader who was adept at spotting species, even in tricky conditions.
P.D. Hertfordshire, Feb 19 -
The Onsens were a delight. The Red-crowned crane viewing was sublime. The food excellent.
B.A. Australia, Feb 19 -
We visited several areas of Japan to see the wildlife, especially the birds, but also Sika Deer and Snow Monkeys and a Serow. Many thousands of Cranes, Sea Eagles and Fishing Owls were among the highlights. The tour guide was very knowledgeable about the birds and managed to spot the small ones very quickly and get the telescope on them so all of us could get a close-up view. The hotels were good but the Onsens (Japanese Spa Hotels) we stayed in were delightful. The arrangements for the holiday were done by friendly and knowledgeable staff. The flights were good quality and we were met at the Japanese end by the tour guide and a local tour guide who was also very helpful.
T.S. Leicestershire, Jan 19 -
Hokkaido in winter has wonderful wildlife and scenery. It's not to be missed.
D.D.Clyde, Feb 19 -
Naturetrek... took me from the Mediterranean climate of Kyushu, where thousands of cranes were spending the winter, through the main island of Honshu, where we saw the snow monkeys enjoying the hot water pools, and to wintry Hokkaido, where I was stunned by the beauty of the dancing red-crowned cranes in the snow, and the huge Steller's eagles on the pack ice. I too enjoyed relaxing in the outdoor hot pools, gazing up at snowy trees; in Hokkaido we stayed in three traditional inns, which was a lovely contrast to the days we spent in bustling Tokyo, and introduced the group to traditional Japanese cuisine.
S.T. Cambridgeshire, Feb 19 -
Hokkaido is a magical place in February - very cold and snowy, which added to the experience. Our excellent leader Duncan and helpful Japanese guide took us to see beautiful, elegant red crowned cranes, noisily displaying, as they waited to be fed. This species nearly disappeared, but local Japanese people sustained them over winter by putting out feed. Their population is now thriving. To see one white tailed eagle or one Steller's sea eagle is a magical moment, but to see many of them swooping down to pick up fish, thrown out by the boat was magical. Before docking, the boat then came alongside a pier, which meant you were at eye level with these majestic fish eagles as the snow sprinkled around them. I could go on and on, but one more special encounter was with the Japanese Macaque - "snow monkeys" near Nagano. Although the hot springs are visited by thousands of tourists, one can still be captivated by these intelligent animals luxuriating in the warm, steaming springs or meticulously grooming each other. Naturetrek gave an accurate description of what to expect, and it delivered.
F.T. Lancashire, Jan 19 -
A very enjoyable and successful trip to Japan... All flights, connections and accommodation worked well and the wildlife spectacles were superb. We also managed to take in some cultural aspects of the country and sampled local cuisine extensively. Local guides / translators were very helpful and knowledgeable. Weather also very kind to us!

Tour Leader: Duncan McNiven
A native of Manchester, after graduating with a Zoology degree Duncan taught Biology in Norfolk, wardened the seabird colonies on the Farne Islands and worked as an expedition ornithologist for a number of American universities in Papua New Guinea, Surinam and Cameroon. His study species included birds-of-paradise, bowerbirds, Guianan Cock-of-the-rock, Capuchinbird and Black-bellied Seedcracker amongst others. During an expedition to Cameroon, he rediscovered a species that had been 'lost' for almost 50 years - the Mt Kupé Bush-shrike. After travelling the world for several years, he worked in the RSPB's Species Protection Unit as Senior Investigations Officer where he campaigned to end the wild bird trade in Europe and investigated crimes against wild birds, especially raptors. After 25 years' service, Duncan left the RSPB to pursue other interests largely centred on enjoying nature both at home in Cambridgeshire and abroad. Duncan has enjoyed watching wildlife in over 50 countries around the world but gets a unique buzz from sharing his experiences of the natural world with others.
Tour Leader: Barrie Cooper
Barrie has a lifelong interest in nature and remains grateful for having fond childhood memories of Skylarks, Yellow Wagtails, Lapwings, Great Crested Newts and Water Voles, species with significant declines during his lifetime. His passion for nature inevitably led him into conservation and a successful career with the RSPB. The latter half of his career was on the international stage where he developed conservation projects and advised and trained conservationists from five continents on how to develop education and communication programmes. Several of his written outputs have been translated into various languages. Some of his training workshops were in China as part of the Spoon-billed Sandpiper programme. Barrie has studied wildlife in over sixty countries across the world and loves sharing his passion for nature with others. Astronomy is another interest from his childhood and he occasionally provides informal stargazing sessions on his tours. He’s now returned to his native Lancashire and lives next to the Lune Estuary on the edge of Morecambe Bay. A little known fact is that he’s a qualified football coach!
