Focus was on the birds migrating to Africa across the Straits of Gibraltar. Exclusive accommodation in a secluded farm. Toured the area with 2 excellent, expert local naturalists, in 2 mini-buses. Holiday included boat trip in the Straits to view whales, dolphins and sea-birds. Everything well organised and went smoothly. Naturetrek is a wildlife tour operator, specialising in bird-watching but also covering mammals, plants etc. Tours available worldwide, usually employing local experts in addition to a Naturetrek guide. Holidays are all inclusive. Accommodation is usually in a rural guest-house / hotel with limited menu eating, but always excellent quality. Very good value for money.

Absolutely fantastic from start to finish. An amazing birding holiday to a beautiful part of Spain, staying at an extremely comfortable farmhouse with excellent facilities. A massive thank you to our amazing guides Simon & Niki, whose knowledge and passion regarding the local wildlife was inspiring - they were also lots of fun. Naturetrek had everything covered, very well organised and to a very high standard. We can’t wait to book our next holiday with Naturetrek.

Accommodation was superb, beautifully renovated and in a lovely area. Birding each day depending on our guides local knowledge and a boat trip into the Straits of Gibraltar for whale and dolphin watching. Our two tour leaders were brilliant, friendly, knowledgeable and great fun, they made the holiday extra special. [Naturetrek is] Easy to contact and very helpful with any queries. Trustworthy and reliable.

This was an unforgettable holiday. The sight of hundreds of raptors streaming over our heads will live in our memory for a long time. Our leaders, Simon and Niki, could not be faulted. Their knowledge of the area and where to go for the best wildlife experiences was superb. They went above and beyond to ensure we got the most from the migration spectacle. The hotel staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome. The food was good and our room comfortable. The quiet location in a bird rich area was a plus. We also appreciated the support given by Naturetrek with regard to dealing with the requirements surrounding covid.

This 'Go Slow' format really suits us, we liked the day's timings. Simon and Niki were really good guides - a nice relaxed, friendly and knowledgeable approach.

Watching the thousands of birds heading off over The Straits of Gibraltar was very moving. Witnessing this spectacle, being given interesting information and gradually learning to identify the birds made the trip very special. I loved every moment of this trip! I liked being with leaders, Simon and Niki who so obviously really know their stuff! Their enthusiasm was a delight and made the holiday more exciting as we searched for certain birds. Both leaders kept a close eye on the group and made sure we were all comfortable, able to see and and happy with the proposed walks. I know from experience that really all I have to do is get on the plane and Naturetrek will look after me until I return.
SR, Sussex, Sep 19 -
Bird watching in Andalusia with Niki and Simon was a magical experience. Their enthusiasm and knowledge were catching. The trip exceeded my expectations. Everything was so well planned. The food was good. The accommodation was comfortable. The weather was perfect for birdwatching and we were treated to some very rare sightings. All in all an unforgettable experience.
S.S. Surrey, Sept 19 -
Simon and Niki were brilliant leaders, very knowledgeable, but also keen for us to learn about the birds and the environment and be able to identify them ourselves. The boat trip into the Straits was brilliant, we saw several sperm whales, plus about 20 bottlenose dolphins playing around our boat. That really gave us a happy glow. The meals were good and plentiful at the hotel. We thoroughly enjoyed it and are now looking at other tours, so many to choose from!
JE, Greater Manchester, September 19 -
When looking for wildlife, nothing beats the aid of a local expert who can make sure you are in the right place at the right time, and with the two guides provided on this Naturetrek holiday to watch birds migrating over the Straits of Gibraltar, we were blessed with really enthusiastic and knowledgeable experts.

Tour Leader: Niki Williamson
Niki was given a YOC membership for her 6th birthday, and has loved nature ever since. She worked and volunteered for the RSPB for 12 years, managing habitats, brandishing power tools with varying levels of success, and honing her birding skills in some of the best wetland, upland and coastal habitats in the UK. She was part of the Eastern England Farmland Advisory team for eight years, working with nature-friendly farmers to make the countryside a better place for wildlife, eventually heading up the team. Niki is particularly passionate about the plight of the Turtle Dove and was part of Operation Turtle Dove, working to ensure a future for this desperately declining bird. As well as the UK, this work took her to West Africa, where she worked closely with Conservation Grade to survey migratory and resident farmland bird species and their habitat needs, to see how local growers could produce peanuts in a way that is fair to nature and of benefit to wintering migrants. Niki now lives in Southern Spain, near Tarifa, where she has worked full time as a wildlife guide for four years, with a focus on showing people the wondrous migration spectacle of the Straits of Gibraltar. She leads tours here for Naturetrek in spring, autumn and summer, and also leads in various other destinations across Spain, including Coto Doñana, Sierra de Morena, Extremadura, Serranía de Ronda, as well as across the straits in Northern Morocco.

Naturetrek Birdwatching Tours
We have one of the largest selections of professionally organised, small group birdwatching holidays around the world and all of our birdwatching tours are accompanied by at least one professional ornithologist leader with detailed knowledge of the area.
The majority of our bird tours have a relaxed, flexible approach which allows more time for photography, detailed wildlife exploration, leisure time and the region’s people, culture, history and architecture, while allowing the group to see a wide range of bird species.
Here is a small selection of our many bird holidays:
- Southern Morocco – an exploration of the birdlife in Morocco’s southern deserts, oases and mountains
- The Camargue in Spring – a short break to enjoy the spring birds of the Rhône Delta and Camargue wetland
- Wallcreepers & Cranes in Northern Spain – a 2-centre holiday focusing on Lammergeier, Wallcreepers, raptors, Cranes, bustards, sandgrouse and more!

Relaxed Wildlife Holidays
Our programme of Go Slow wildlife holidays allows guests to enjoy the natural world at a more leisurely pace than on one of our conventional wildlife holidays. There will be more time to relax, more time to potter, excursions will be optional and we hope you will return, not only having enjoyed a fascinating mix of birds, plants and other wildlife, but also feeling refreshed and relaxed!
Our Go Slow tours range from week-long holidays that offer warm spring sunshine and gentle natural history excursions in Portugal, the Camargue and Mallorca, to tours which take on a more cultural air each afternoon, such as Go Slow … in Istria in Autumn and Go Slow … in Southern Spain. Our Go Slow holidays in the Swiss Alps and Cyprus both combine the best of the region’s botany and birdlife, or, if you would like to travel a little further afield, why not join us for a leisurely-paced exploration of India’s Tiger Country, Kenya’s Masai Mara, or South Africa’s Western Cape?
