Summary
Thailand is an exceptional country for birdwatching and attracts birders from all over the world, so great is the lure of setting eyes on some of Asia's most iconic species, namely the Spoon-billed Sandpiper, Coral-billed Ground Cuckoo and Giant Nuthatch! The ease of birding across the varied habitats ensures a list of over 400 species is very much achievable and will include a range of pheasants, broadbills, pittas and flycatchers. Commencing our tour in the centre of the country, we will first visit the thriving saltpans where up to 30 species of waders are possible; we will then move to nearby forest to appreciate a different mix of avian-life. We then head to the north of the country and set out to find such sought-after species as Giant Nuthatch, Hume's Pheasant and a vast array of mouth-watering Himalayan specialities which winter here. The list of highlights is endless as we cover the very best national parks in the hidden parts of this beautiful south-east Asian country. Mammals will also be appreciated throughout this tour with Asian Elephant, Sun Bear, White-handed Gibbons and other primates all possible.
Accommodation will be in lodges and a number of hotels, while Thailand's superb road network ensures travelling around will be comfortable.
Please note the 03 February departure will spend the first half of the trip in the north, opposite to the itinerary. The same sites and length of time at each site will remain the same.

Tour Leader: Andy Smith
Andy lives on the edge of Dartmoor in South Devon. He’s been a keen birder and naturalist for as long as he can remember and has enjoyed a varied career divided between conservation work in Britain and Ireland, school teaching and wildlife tour leading. He started leading for Naturetrek way back in 1997 and has now led over 150 tours to a wide range of destinations in Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas and Antarctica. When not currently leading tours Andy teaches geography and history to teenagers and in his spare time he explores the natural history of Dartmoor and the South Hams and serves on the records committee of Devon Birds. He also makes regular trips to the west of Ireland to visit his children and grandchildren.
Tour Leader: Richard Bashford
Richard was born in Sandy, which played no small part in his early interest in birds. After leaving school, he began working for the RSPB on a variety of contracts until undertaking an environmental degree. In 1995 he worked for the British Trust for Ornithology, running the Breeding Bird Survey, but has worked back at the RSPB in Sandy since 2001 running projects such as the world's biggest wildlife survey - Big Garden Birdwatch. Richard has travelled widely in search of wildlife and has taken part in ornithological projects in Kenya, Botswana, Jordan and Albania and China (the latter searching for Spoon-billed Sandpipers). He has been leading tours since the 1980s and has led Naturetrek holidays throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Middle East, North and Central America. He is very active in his home county of Bedfordshire, supporting survey work and spending much of his free time searching for birds, butterflies and moths.

The majority of our wildlife tours focus primarily on birds, allowing us to offer a huge choice of bird holidays. On most of our birdwatching tours we aim to see a wide variety of species, while taking time to enjoy other wildlife as well as cultural highlights and architecture.
Naturetrek Birdwatching Tours
We have one of the largest selections of professionally organised, small group birdwatching holidays around the world and all of our birdwatching tours are accompanied by at least one professional ornithologist leader with detailed knowledge of the area.
The majority of our bird tours have a relaxed, flexible approach which allows more time for photography, detailed wildlife exploration, leisure time and the region’s people, culture, history and architecture, while allowing the group to see a wide range of bird species.
